DISABILITY & CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE
Despite being fit & leading a healthy lifestyle in 2006 (when my wife Roxanne was still going through treatment for breast cancer) I was diagnosed with what ended up being a rare blood clotting disorder called Budd–Chiari syndrome. This led to spending a total of almost 10 months at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton while Roxanne’s mother looked after our 2 children in Calgary. I was very grateful & fortunate to receive 2 lifesaving liver transplants. One doctor estimated that my medical costs exceeded 6 million dollars however being in Canada we of course didn’t receive the bill.
My wife & I are both back to excellent health (myself since the fall of 2007). I feel that our story is a very good case study regarding the importance of considering Disability & Critical illness Insurance as we both have our own Disability Plans which made a huge difference when I missed almost 1.5 years of work & my wife was by my side the entire time.
In particular I have found that the self-employed often overlook the importance of Disability Insurance, especially when changing from full-time employment where they have had Group Insurance over to a contracting position. This is something I fully understand & can relate to.
At the bottom of this page is a video we originally made as a thank you for the University of Alberta Hospital Staff and the Transplant Clinic in Calgary; it is now used by the hospital & clinic for educational purposes as well as to provide hope to newly diagnosed patients. It’s a short 6 minute video that tells the story of the journey we went through regarding 2 organ transplants.
